Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry named after Arbuzov A., Kazan Scientific Center of RAS, is a research center of the Russian Academy of Sciences located in Kazan.
It is the largest physical-chemical and chemical-biological research center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Volga Region. The main activities are the chemistry of phosphorus, hetero and macrocyclic compounds, carbon and organoelemental nanoclusters; creation of biologically active drugs; chemistry and geochemistry of oil; stereochemistry and crystal chemistry of molecular, supramolecular and nanoscale systems; diagnosis of functional materials. The first in Russia regional center for state quality control of drugs has been established at the IOPC. The Institute is actively involved in the selection of candidates for the International Arbuzov Prize in the field of phosphorus chemistry.
There are about 220 employees including two academicians and one corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, four members of the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan, about 32 doctors of sciences and 120 candidates of sciences.
Today the IOPC is the largest multifunctional physical-chemical and chemical-biological research center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Volga region.
Melaphene is a biologically active compound synthesized in the IOPC named after A. Arbuzov which has been successfully used in agriculture to increase productivity as well as for environmental purposes to stimulate the process of purification of wastewater and oil-contaminated soils.
